Why Millennials Love Working in Makati City

Every weekday, close to two million people flock to the Makati City Central Business

District to work, deal, shop, or do commerce. With Makati City accounting for close to three quarters of Metro Manila’s prime office space inventory, it is the home to the highest concentration of local and multinational corporations in the Philippines spanning various industries including banking and finance, telecommunications, advertising, law, government, Business Process Outsourcing, and information technology.   More than one million people who visit Makati for work each day are non-residents of the city.

This short piece gives us an overview of why the young workforce know more commonly as Millennials, love working in Makati.

1) Center of Glamorous Jobs

Way back in the 1990s, esteemed columnist Max Soliven wrote, "Whenever the movie industry needs someone to be a successful executive, they always cast someone as a person working in advertising in Makati City".  The statement is not far from the truth.  Makati City, having the highest concentration of multinational corporations in the Philippines is a haven for those who seek glamorous jobs, whatever that may mean in this day and age.

Out in the province, eyebrows are always raised among relatives and ex-classmates when they find out that the former town squirt is now a successful suit in Makati.

2) Lots of after-work chill out spots

Makati is an entertainment hub that offers a lot of activities and location options for people who want to unwind or hang out with friends after work. There are a lot of new areas which excite Millennials not just for dining but also for co-working.  For those who like to mix dining with working, there is 59 Paseo de Roxas which is a unique late 1960s period house which was converted to accomodate various businesses including 59c, a co-work and chow space with lots of yummy fusion cuisine, and Nikko's Baking Studio, a cafe which doubles as a studio.

Then there's also the area quartered between Jupiter and Kalayaan Avenue which is now fast becoming a bustling food center with the old guards like Alba's and La Tienda, seamlessly blending in with the new places like Commune and the restobars along Durban Street.

3) Haven for fastfood junkies

Makati is the perfect location for fastfood junkies, especially Ayala Avenue, because it has almost every popular fastfood chain you could think of. "There's McDonalds, Jollibee, KFC, Krispy Kreme, S&R Pizza and a lot more", says Zeno, a millennial working in a tech startup.

The nice places are the secluded fastfoods like the ones conveniently tucked away in Salcedo Village.  One can also explore the food courts at GT Tower, RCBC Plaza, LKG Tower, and Enterprise.

4) A Walkable City

Millennials are multi-taskers.  They love shooting two birds with one stone.  Makati offers the Millennial worker the opportunity to get some exercise by walking around.  While on-demand ride services such as Grab and Uber have made it a lot easier to shuttle from one meeting to the next, it is also good to do some walking and hit your targeted 10,000 steps per day.

Soon, the Ayala Elevated walkway from Landmark will connect all the way to Makati Medical Center via De La Rosa Street.

5) Conducive for a healthy lifestyle

Makati has numerous mini-parks. "The best way to unwind after work is to take long walks or to jog. Makati can be quite relaxing after work hours and during early mornings", says Jessel, a digital marketing expert.

"I loved being able to exercise after work hours", is a common sentiment shared among millennials.  Makati can be quite relaxing after work hours and during early mornings with the plethora of health related activities in gyms, parks, martial arts studios, or yoga places.
